"Song For Ukraine (Walk on)" - U2

Song for Ukraine

And if the comet takes the stage
And no one laughs
Does a dance on his own grave
For a photograph
This is not a curtain call
This is the greatest act of all
Stand up for freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you got, they can’t steal it
They can’t even feel it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight

And if the dancer gets it wrong
And will still dare
Can’t tell the singer from the song
If it gets you there

And there’s a kind of rage
That you can’t keep inside a cage
You fight or you fly
We’re born and we die
For freedom

Walk on, walk on
What you got, they can’t deny it
Can’t sell it or buy it
Walk on, walk on
Stay safe tonight
I know it aches,
And your heart it breaks
You can only take so much

Home, you don’t know what it is
Til you’re forced to flee one
Home, ‘til I know where it is
I will have to be one
Home, that’s where the hurt is

Oh, walk on, walk on
[You can’t decide a line] -
(that was Bono not deciding on a line, lol)
You know it aches, and your heart it breaks
You can only take to much
Walk on, walk on

All that fashion, all that you make
All that you build, whatever they break
All that you dream of, all you design
All that you can’t leave behind

All that you reckon, all that you dare
All that you fought for when it wasn’t there
All that you summon
The hills that you climb
All that you can’t leave behind

Not gonna leave it behind
Not gonna leave it behind
Not gonna leave it behind (Walk on)
Not gonna leave it behind (Walk on)

1st Verse: Can be readily analyzed as "comet" being a word substitution for (former) "comedian", obviously Zelensky. (Bono's now reduced himself to whoring national holidays along with intentionally whoring his faith in dubbing Zelensky a modern day St. Patrick for the benefit of Speaker Pelosi.) Zelensky deserves this one liner as per his ascendency. (-We've graduated from electing former B-actors who shoot well for speeches, (who turncoated on their profession during the McCarthy hearings), -to reality TV star candidates, to comedians who played going on to win the election on TV and it becoming reality.) He was deliberately sacrificed to an impossible position, consigned to set Ukraine/himself on fire by the US neocon/lib fascist loving cabal while screaming "I'm the beard", down to the last pump and dump arms toting civilian, ending with the indoctrinated. (Also Zelensky's released child rapist battalion?)

I mean you can interpret the song as praising this diabolism if that's how you like it... -quite an assumption when the song's concept isn't even elucidated, that it's invisible is the point, though of course Bono just bequeathed you with that assumption himself..

I prefer to think the "comet" is self referential where Bono's concerned, because he ended up putting himself between a rock and a hard place by deliberately concealing reality for so long as to make a total horse's ass of himself (whoring his faith he deliberately turned into a vacuum of omission by non-acknowledgment (that made the vacuum utilitarian to the powers he ingratiated himself with) led him to dub a Nazi descendent a leading feminist), which means revealing the truth will lead to him hanging on his own petard a little bit, because endorsing a comedian in the manner he did is not funny, when he himself knows the man is a marrionette dancing on his own grave (albeit his country's, as by all Pandora Paper indicators he will likely escape unscathed and well rewarded).

Or you can take an alternative read on based on the song's original premise (iBook, p. 1468, again the deliberate political re-framing didn't age well), which was something invisible that couldn't be bought, sold or stolen, not implicitly freedom as per this re-tooled rewrite. It was about a lot more than that.

October 2021 letter: Bono got this link, the iBook, Martin's full letter, and the attempt to convert that into a public field exercise. "Eden"'s song analysis prompted a quote from Martin's letter (now you know why I have to archive): p. 21, " 'And it forced me through a full abnegation that felt like a comet’s disintegration hitting the atmosphere for a full five days.' (Also I made the typo mistake that this was Spring Break when it had to have been Thanksgiving Break (November). I didn't mention that when I went to pick up my children, (they'd been away for the five days when this happened), -my daughter had inexplicably drawn a blazing comet in chalk on the cement patio deck.)" And, like I said, "That sense of devastation made a momentary false appearance inside “California” on Songs of Innocence. (-Oops. -And there we have it. Santa Barbara! This is heading for Santa Barbara. - Oh irony.)

It's just your light gets dimmer if you have to stay In your bedroom
In a mirror, Watching yourself cry like a baby

California, blood orange sunset brings you to your knees

I've seen for myself There's no end to grief That's how I know"

The the comet simile was my description of the fallout of the breaking that happened between Bono and myself in 2013, a two party disintegration that he was a part of and also architect to in complement to myself. I was describing my own state of being. I noticed when the song was produced he lightly said it was referring to a sort of emotional apocalypse. (No one asked.)

So what does this letter capitulate, really?

I'm not going to quote the letter, because it is throughout the entire body and a reprise on what was already sent (up to and including Martin's letter itself), the wrap. In one sentence, it is admission of the fundamental mistake of pursuing an ending with Corgan and the unwillingness to accept that what was happening was solely promulgated by a transcendent consciousness, not by him or any one individual apparently involved party, including Bono himself. The narrative chronicles final acceptance of this shift by being involuntarily resurrected into a context that rationally forced that conclusion after a calculated trial and error series of tests, so again, we're talking about very long form experiences over time that Bono manages to distill into a simple verse:

And if the dancer gets it wrong
And will still dare
Can’t tell the singer from the song
If it gets you there

I mean, you can take your pick which dancer you'd prefer this is about, I guess, given we know Bono knows about this book enough to signify all this, (so he knows about my dancing background as much as he (may or preferably may not know)) about Zelensky's.

In terms of invoking the invisible, what do you think this actually means?

All that you reckon, all that you dare
All that you fought for when it wasn’t there
All that you summon
The hills that you climb

Do you think these verses are about praising a serial liar who's doing his damndest to try to incite WWIII over Ukraine (remember the "10xs worse than Chernobyl" horses*** to start)? Interpret, go ahead. (When it comes to fellating warmongering or warmongers, I'm in full agreement this is not a first.)

I for one don't agree. I'm an exiled, forcibly confined refugee as much as any. The consequences that caused me to flee happened interpersonally not nationally, but that my life was under threat and that it impelled me cross border (and left me decimated to start over with nothing) is not a question. That's why (for me) home is where the hurt is and the only home that exists is the invisible one you had to create yourself.

Quite the position to take to conceal this under that, isn't it (since it involves feeding this lie to your audience)? Sort of fulfills the opening verse, but then he was always prepared to be the clown. The interesting thing about it is that the more he performs this way, the steeper the price, every time. High time for the alternative, for there to be an alternative, and that it be "alternative". That is why the term was coined.

Yes, I am personally very happy about the song. U2 endorsing this on every Canadian tour stop their last tour, not so much.
